What exactly are injectable biologics?
Injectable biologics are starting to be used in vitiligo medications with the Edesa Biotech(EBO6) being a prime example of this. This is why it is important to know what they are exactly and how they work in order to further your vitiligo investigation possibilities.
A totally unique approach: Unlike other drugs that are mixed together from chemicals, biologics are grown form inside living cells. (bacteria, yeast, etc) this makes them much larger than normal drugs.
The benefit: Deep specificity: The biologics mimic the bodies natural molecules meaning they can target specific parts of the immune system with a deep level of precision. This could mean fewer side effects compared to other treatments.
The need for injection: If they were swallowed in a tablet form the stomach acid would digest it because they are proteins. They would be destroyed before reaching your bloodstream.
Why not a cream then?: The biologic molecules are too large to soak through the skin layers and reach deeper tissue. They need to be injected to reach where they ned to be. this can be done by an IV infusion or an injection just under the skin.
Biologics have had a massive impact in other health conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and asthma and we strongly hope they will do the same for vitiligo
